I feel compelled to say a few words here about hiring local creative businesses for your marketing and advertising needs.
By now we should be well informed on the benefits of shopping local when you can (stronger economy, closer community, etc.) but I wonder how many of you think of shopping local for your online marketing and advertising needs.
If you own a business in Galveston County, you no doubt have had numerous calls from companies all over promising to get you on the first page of Google. For just a $150 a month (and a $49 set up fee), they promise all sorts of things that I'm here to tell you they will likely never deliver. And here's the real kicker, they don't really care if they do or not. By the time you're 6 months in and you figure this out, they already have almost a grand of your hard earned money.
As a recent example, I have a client for whom I published a WordPress website. They received a call from a company in California making these promises. Here's the thing: I'm good at Googling. I'm not bragging, it's a fact. I've done it for a long time and I enjoy it. In my experience, I can find things the average person can't find online. So I Googled this company that pressured my friend into signing a 6 month agreement and I know they are a fraud. What do they care about his business? They don't!! It both angers me and makes me sad. (BTW it can take time to rank in Google and there are many factors - another blog post for another time.)
So my point here is: we have quite a few local web designers and digital marketers in our community that will work hard to get your website on the first page of Google, get you more Facebook likes, increase your Twitter and Instagram following, manage your social media and improve your SEO, etc. Not just my business which is fairly new but other well established agencies and freelancers. They will care about your business because they are your neighbors. They are not anonymous voices on the phone making hard sales. They have a vested interest in our community. They have reputations to consider.
I don't like long blog posts so I'm going to wrap this up even though I have so much more to say about this. I will come back to this subject again but I encourage you to look into hiring local for your Internet marketing needs. I have several contacts so please feel free to ask. I have no problem making recommendations for businesses other than mine. There is plenty of web work out there for everyone and I am only in competition with myself anyway.
Thank you for your time. Time is your most valuable resource. You can't buy more or borrow more. There are lots of ways to make money but once time is gone, it's gone forever. So thank you.
